The small bowel is currently the most difficult to examine segment of the digestive tract due to its distal location from both natural orifices usually used during routine digestive endoscopy. However, examining it is vital as an important number of pathologies, most of them malignant and thus with vital implications for the patient, reside at this level. All these methods were either too intrusive or did not provide sufficient data for an accurate diagnostic. Wireless capsule endoscopies WCEalong with balloon single or double or spiral enteroscopy are considered the two most valuable tools available to the gastroenterologist. It is estimated that millions of capsules have been swallowed worldwide in the last decade.

Surgical tumor resection and liver transplantation, remain the only curative modalities for HCC, but recurrence rate is still high. In light of the dismal clinical outcome of this neoplasm, the development of effective systems that can predict the likelihood of recurrence is much needed.

Classically, two general models of carcinogenesis have been debated: the stochastic model and the hierarchical model. The hierarchical model or cancer stem cell CSC model, postulates that a single CSC gives rise to a hierarchic organization containing varied downstream descendants, proliferates extensively, and initiates tumors at high frequency.

The hepatocellular cancer medical term of liver stem cells in HCC carcinogenesis has been illustrated experimentally. Our project will allow the identification of new diagnosis and prognosis markers for HCC, potentially adding novel markers to the molecular classifications.

Impact, relevance, applications. The impact of the project will be assessed by: The clinical impact — prediction of early recurrence leading to more aggressive follow-up after surgical therapy; potential identification of new molecular markers for targeted therapy; selection of patients for LT that have a low risk for recurrence according to identified significant markers.

The social impact — increase of the quality of life and survival of HCC patients; increase of the efficacy of treatment methods by their applicability in early stages; allow the best use of the scarce number of liver allografts available The economic impact — decrease of the costs of medical assistance by optimizing the diagnostic and therapeutic act.

In particular, attention is given to the information achieved by experimental models, such as phantoms and animal studies. This review targets the clinical applications of ARFI in the evaluation of chronic diffuse disease, especially of liver and kidneys. The hepatocellular cancer medical term of ARFI to the clinical workout of these patients and some possible perspectives are described. Introduction Adopted from clinical practice from long ago, palpation examines the mechanical properties of target organs following the general logic shared by all modern imaging methods: it explores tissues detecting the effects determined by an external force. While conventional radiology and computed tomography extract information from the differential attenuation of X-photons due to density and to the mean atomic number in the body volume sampled, the background of palpation-based diagnosis lies in the relationship linking several diseases to the modifications of tissue stiffness that they induce.

Current anticancer drugs kill differentiated cancer cells and cause a reduction in tumour mass. However, the cancer often recurs after treatment and this can be attributed to the presence of CSCs. Current research is now looking into a new generation of anticancer drugs or therapies that will selectively and specifically destroy hepatocellular cancer medical term populations of CSCs while leaving the normal stem cell population unharmed, to allow for the complete regeneration of normal tissue.

This is of even more importance in liver cirrhosis setting as are the majority of  HCC patients that undergo resection.

Other potential application is the identification of a gene expression signature that could effectively predict early recurrence of HCC independent of microarray platforms and cohorts, and provide novel biological insights into the mechanisms of tumor recurrence in HBV and HCV related HCC.

There are numerous studies that have shown a pleiotropic effect of statins in chronic liver diseases. They increase nitric oxide synthesis, restore endothelial cell function and, by that, increase the number of progenitor endothelial cells which improve endothelial function. Hepatocellular cancer medical term lowers portal pressure in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension by reduction of hepatic vascular resistance without adverse effects on systemic circulation and with an excellent safety profile. Simvastatin addition to standard therapy in patients with cirrhosis who recover from an acute variceal bleeding episode improves survivability.
